Tactical Plans

When finally on their way back to the southeast coast, H’Ilgraith told Jak about the two scouts she had left behind. “They and I can blend into the vegetation. So could you, as a gray fox. You just wouldn’t be able to see anything. As a wolf, you can see what is happening and can provide the strongest defense if we are attacked. You would also stick out like a sore thumb and attract attention. Which species do you want to assume?” she asked.

“Human,” Jak replied. “I can blend into the grass, too,” he said. “And I will have a strong bow and many arrows,” he added. “If an armed force comes ashore, I can draw their fire, taking at least one or two of them out of the fight, while you and the other scouts circle them in an ambush.”

“And if the armed force is an army?” asked H’Ilgraith.

“We will have to switch to plan B,” offered Jak.

“What is plan B?”

“I have no idea. Maybe your two compatriots can come up with one.”

As it turned out, the four scouts had plenty of time to consider plans B, C, D, and E after resuming human form. Their musings were interrupted temporarily when the ship reappeared on its return trip. This time, it did not linger as it passed by. Nevertheless, the scouts continued their watch for several days in case the ship returned. Finally, H’Ilgraith renewed her inspection of the flora and fauna of the area. When Balthorean returned to H’Aleth with his report, Jak and Latransa teamed up to maintain surveillance should the ship return.

It did not. There was no need. Rex’s ship had made its successful maiden voyage. He now only needed to plot how and when to use his new warship.
